With a resolution being adopted by the City of Postville in November of 2023 recognizing Our Postville Heart and Soul and the discovery of what matters most to members of the community, it was obvious that English as a second language (ESL) classes are a priority.

With over half the population of Postville being non native English speakers, the need to break down the language barrier is necessary in order to nurture Postville’s community diverse populations in schools, businesses and throughout the community.

Crystal Duffy, Community Heart and Soul Project Coordinator, explained, “ESL classes were held in Postville for several years prior to COVID. However, they have not resumed in person since the pandemic became less prevalent. In every survey we have taken the need for in person classes was at the top of the list and we are partnering  with NICC to bring the classes to Postville this month.”

Duffy and Sam Robertson, representing the Iowa Migratory Education Program, worked with NICC to hire a teacher and make the classes available to Postville residents.

The classes, which will be held at the Northeast Iowa Wellness and Recreation Center, will be taught by Julia Benson of Decorah. The first session, beginning May 28, is at capacity with 15 students. Classes will be held twice weekly and offered at no charge to the participants. It should be noted that Benson will be compensated through NICC with no charge to the community or the participants.

Duffy said, “Even though the first section is full, we already have a large waiting list and we encourage people to continue to sign up as we expect the classes to continue indefinitely. Future classes can also be scheduled around work obligations. The scheduling can be very flexible with afternoon and evening classes being possible as the need arises.”
