Eugene (Gene) Leslie Suddendorf

Eugene (Gene) Leslie Suddendorf, 96, of Postville, Iowa passed away Saturday, February 5, 2022, at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville, Iowa. Eugene was born September 23, 1925 to Arthur Frederick and Martha Elizabeth (Montour) Suddendorf on a farm in Monona Township in Clayton County, Iowa.

Eugene was a member of St Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. He was baptized on May 9, 1926, at Pilgrim Evangelical Church in Monona. He was confirmed March 24, 1940, at St Paul Lutheran Church in Monona. He attended Evergreen Grove County School in Monona.

He worked on farms in Monona Township until 1947. He then moved to Postville where he worked as a Lineman for the Allamakee-Clayton Rural Electric Co-Op (REC). He retired from the REC in 1987. For a number of years Gene and Maxine, along with Maxine’s parents, Otto and Florence Appel, owned and operated The Palm Cafe in Postville.

On April 6, 1948, he married Maxine Appel at St Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. Three sons were born to this union.

Gene enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and watching baseball on TV. He loved his grand and great-grandchildren and enjoyed “occasionally” teasing them in a playful manner. Even more so, he relished the tricks they played on him in return.

Survivors include his children Ronald (Sandra) Suddendorf of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Gary (Kathe) Suddendorf of Saline, Michigan and Kevin (Wendy) Suddendorf of Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Jessica (Michael) Jansen, Erich (Stephannie) Suddendorf, Kylie Suddendorf and Kole (Karrigan) Suddendorf and great-grandchildren, Madalyn Jansen, Dylan Jansen, Juliette Suddendorf and Xavier Suddendorf.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Maxine (Appel) Suddendorf; his parents, Arthur and Martha (Montour) Suddendorf; sister and brother-in-law, Irene and Jack Messler, brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Mardella Suddendorf and brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Rita Suddendorf.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Thursday, February 10, 2022 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, Iowa with a visitation from 9:30 am until time of services at the church on Thursday. Rev. Lynn Noel will be the Officiant.

Interment will be at Postville Cemetery, Postville, Iowa.
