Opal Mildred (Thyer) Colvin
Opal Mildred (Thyer) Colvin, was born on December 24, 1925, on the Revell family farm near Volga, Iowa. Her father, Cecil Thyer was born August 6, 1883 in Glastonberry, Somersetshire, England and immigrated to America when he was 19 years old. Her mother, Minnie Rebecca Revell was born June 15, 1888 on the farm at Volga, Iowa. They met and were married December 3, 1912. Opal was the fifth of seven children to this union.
Opal was baptized March 31, 1948 in the Evangelical and Reformed Church at Elkader. She attended the Bailey Ridge and the Stone Schools, near Volga and graduated from the Elkader High School on April 16, 1944.
On September 1, 1948 Opal was married to Donald Leo Colvin in the Evangelical and Reformed Church by the Reverend Kitterer. They had an adopted son, Tracy, who died in 1968 at the age of eight.
Opal and Don lived in Elkader where Opal was employed by Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. In 1951 they moved to Iowa City where she transferred to the Telephone Company for a total of 15 years with the same company. In 1965 they moved to Postville. Opal was employed as a bookkeeper for three different businesses from 1968 until she retired from Schutte's Home Furnishings at the end of 1983.
Opal was kept busy by her many interests which included sewing, crocheting and quilting. She also enjoyed reading novels, playing cards and fishing.
Preceding her are her husband, Don; a son, Tracy; four brothers, Jim, Frank, Ernest and Charles; two sisters, Lena May and husband, Don Woods; Florence and husband, Keith Jennings; brother-in-law, William Colvin and wife, Joan; and a sister-in-law, Mary Jo (James) Seaba.
Surviving are nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Frances Thyer; other relatives and many friends.
Opal was a member of Community Presbyterian Church in Postville.
Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, January 18, 2021 at Community Presbyterian Church in Postville, Iowa with Rev. Kate Rupert as the officiant. The Visitation will be one hour before services at the church on Monday.
Interment will be at Oakland Cemetery in Waukon, Iowa.
Due to Covid-19, Masks and social distancing are required.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Community Presbyterian Church in Postville, Iowa.
