Shortened softball season to begin next week; 23 girls report for the team

With Betsy Shea at the helm and Riley Brockway as the assistant, the Postville High School softball season is about to get underway. As practice began June 1, games will start next Monday, June 15. While Shea, who has taught and overseen extracurricular activities at PHS for many years, is the returning head coach, Brockway is new to the program. A graduate of Postville High School and Wartburg College, where he was a stand-out athlete, Brockway brings a plethora of knowledge to the program. Of Brockway Shea said, “He brings a wealth of coaching talent to the program and will keep the girls on their toes.”

About the abbreviated season, Shea said, “It is going to be a very different season.  We have many different things that are happening based on COVID - 19 restrictions. We are sanitizing all equipment before and after practice. We are practicing social distancing while practicing. Games will look a bit different with dugouts being extended to allow for distancing, no concession stands, and no bleachers. Spectators are asked to bring their own chairs and stay together as family units. So far the girls have been very good at doing their best to social distance and follow all the guidelines.”

Currently, there are 23 girls out for the team. Returning letter winners include Mackenzie Mohs and Haley Palas, juniors; Emily Navarro and Kylee Whalen, sophomores and Harley Hoppe, Tania Marroquin and Sierra Mohs, freshmen.
