Postville Police Chief Matt Ellis and City Clerk Darcy Radloff received notification this fall that the City was awarded a USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) grant to be used for the purchase of a new police vehicle. Following the completion of all paperwork, the car, a 2025 Ford Interceptor SUV, arrived in Postville last month.

Chief Ellis said, “This multi-purpose vehicle will be used for the K-9 dog as well as for transporting prisoners. All of our officers will be using the squad car at various times.”

About the grant process, Ellis said, “I was notified about the grant in the spring and felt that it was something we would qualify for. After Darcy and I talked about it, we began the application process which was quite long and involved.”

Radloff added, “We were in good standing with the USDA as we last worked with them during the construction of the wastewater treatment plant. We collaborated with USDA representative Ethan Krueger during the application process and we were fortunate to be accepted.”

With the award, the City was able to purchase the 2025 Ford Interceptor SUV and all the necessary equipment. The grant included $43,809 for the vehicle and $44,148 for the equipment. Additionally, this grant did not require the City to provide any matching funds.

Equipment being installed in the car, along with the K-9 cage, include the siren and lights, and computer. There will also be extra storage for loose equipment. Detailing and lettering will be added before the car is out on the streets.

Radloff added, “According to our agreement with the USDA, we are required to keep it for three years and if it is wrecked we are obligated to pay back all funds received. Needless to say, we will use the car wisely as we do all City vehicles.”

Both Ellis and Radloff agreed this grant frees up money for other much needed equipment including body cameras and computers. They are also planning to add additional officers in the near future and as the need arises.
