Mayoral, two Council seats up for election on November ballot; Rekow not seeking reelection

City Elections will be held in Postville on Tuesday, November 2. Two council seats, as well as that of the mayor will be on the ballot. The seats currently held by Mary Engstrom and Don Miller are up for reelection as is Mayor Leigh Rekow’s position. The three seats are all for four year terms.

Mayor Leigh Rekow, who has served as mayor for the several term and also served on the City Council, has been a dedicated public servant for nearly three decades. Rekow has announced that he is retiring from City government and will not be seeking reelection. For more information about the Mayoral duties interested candidates may contact either Rekow or City Clerk Darcy Radloff.

Candidates for all vacancies must be an eligible elector, meeting the same qualifications required to vote, and be a resident of the city they plan to serve.  Nomination papers are available at the City Hall.  Nominees must obtain at least ten (10) eligible signatures.  Candidate filing begins Monday August 23rd and ends with papers due to the County Auditor by 5:00 p.m. Thursday September 16, 2021.

The City of Postville conducts business on the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. with additional work sessions and special meetings being held when necessary.  Council members are also assigned to the various city committees.

One of the most challenging and exciting responsibilities an individual can assume is to become a council member or mayor.  The business of city government and local leadership presents a unique opportunity to resolve issues, accomplish goals and affect the future of the community.
