Lopez Martin, Menne capture first-ever Pirate UIC girls’ wrestling titles
ELKADER – Sophia Lopez Martin took Postville’s first-ever Upper Iowa Conference girls’ wrestling championship at 155 pounds and Ariana Menne followed minutes later at 170 as the Postville girls’ wrestling team competed in the first Upper Iowa Conference girls’ wrestling tournament at Central High School in Elkader.
Lopez Martin, a freshman, pinned MFL MarMac freshman Hannah Jacobson 24 seconds into the third period in her only match of the night. She was seeded first in her weight class and had byes until the final.
Menne, a senior needed just 1 minute, 30 seconds to win her two matches. In her semifinal match she needed just 23 seconds to pin Waukon’s Jada Protsman and in the final she needed just 1:07 to pin MFL MarMac’s Aurdrey Ruff.
Pirate sophomores Bernice Garcia and Isabelle White also reached the finals, with Garcia dropping a major decision at 115 pounds and White getting pinned at 135. Other Pirate place winners were Sophia Salinas fourth at 120, Fernanda Hernandez fifth at 140 and Jasmin Roman sixth at 100.
The Pirates placed fourth in the team race. New Hampton/Turkey Valley won the meet with 151 points while Waukon (127 ½) and North Fayette Valley (125) rounded out the top three.
Postville wrestles for state tournament berths Friday at a Class 1A state qualifier at East Buchanan High School in Winthrop.
