Linda Kay Bacon

I was born in Monona, IA on February 21, 1948, to Kathryn Moody Fritz and Lester John Fritz. My childhood was spent growing up on our farm. A simple life having sleepovers, playing with our cats, doing typical farm chores, and of course fighting with my youngest sister, Cheryl.

My involvement with music at an early age added so much joy to my life and has carried me through many of life’s curveballs. It was scary to start high school coming from St. Patrick’s, but I told myself, “I have my music”. I played piano, sang for high school events, and often played for weddings and funerals. In later years, I enjoyed singing in the Christmas Cantata at St. Paul’s Church.

I loved visiting nursing homes and sharing my music. Meeting the senior citizens and hearing their stories was something I appreciated. I always tried to make it a memorable experience for them and I enjoyed it as much as they did.

Potholders; oh, the potholders. I spent years crocheting my infamous potholders for many to enjoy. I handed them out freely and happily to lots of ladies, always jokingly reminding them that these potholders love water, but not fire. After being diagnosed, I was known at the hospital as the silly potholder lady. I’ve gifted dozens and dozens of potholders over the years, and it was lots of fun.

I was married in 1968 and was blessed with my three wonderful sons; Michael (wife Kimberly), Christopher (wife Elizabeth) and Jeremy (wife Amy) who have been my pride and joy. To see them grow up and become wonderful husbands and dads has warmed my heart beyond words. Our boys didn’t always live near, so I had the opportunity to visit them wherever they lived. Two of my most memorable times were visiting California and Yosemite Park. I have to brag about my 10 grandchildren who are so fun and caring. They challenged me over the years to join in activities, including flashlight tag and sledding. More memories! We made so many memories!

I married Ralph Bacon in 1979 and we blended our families with his children, Brent and Jody. There were lots of busy days and activities. I’ve been a good sport and appreciated the excitement of different adventures. Ralph and I loved taking road trips, including one out west and to New York City. Playing cards with friends and family was always fun for us. We also had a good time on Friday nights at the Luana Tap.

There have been lots of trips with my sisters Julie and Cheryl. We went to Branson, a Christmas concert in Minneapolis, and visited Dubuque. But the most fun over the years has just been hitting used stores and garage sales. We all loved a good bargain!

I’ve shared many special times with my cousin, Lynn Moody, who was born the same month as me. So many laughs were shared over the years, and he has given me such support through this journey.

Ralph has been by my side for 45 years. During these last 2 years he has shown me so much love and taken loving care of me. I also want to thank all my devoted friends who have been a breath of fresh air and such a loving comfort to me during my illness. All the food and visits were much appreciated by Ralph and me.

My faith has been very important to me all my life. God has been there for me through the good and not so good times. And my faith was with me the day the doctor said I wasn’t going to make it. I told her, “It’s ok because I know where I’m going.”

Oh, and people who write their own obituaries always get the last word. So, I love you all and keep your fork.

In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Monona, Iowa or the Murphy Helwig Public Library in Monona.

A memorial visitation will be held Monday, April 15, 2024 from 4-7 pm at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home, 500 W. Center Street, Monona, Iowa 52159.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 16, 2024 at 11:00 am at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 401 S. Egbert Street, Monona, Iowa 52159, where you can visit with the family 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

Inurnment will be held at a later date at Monona Cemetery, Monona, Iowa.
