City asks citizens to follow garbage rules

The City of Postville is reminding its citizens to follow rules around garbage collection and disposal.

Garbage totes (garbage cans) are picked up by automated trucks, so the totes need to be set on the curbside on City streets (not in the alleys) with the handle facing the home. A three-foot area around the tote needs to be clear for the arms of the truck to pick it up, so the City asks that each tote be set away from other totes, mailboxes, poles, trees, etc. All garbage must fit inside the tote with the lid securely closed. Any garbage that does not fit can be set to the side with excess garbage stickers (available for purchase at City Hall) on the bags.

Large items must have large item stickers on each item to be picked up, which can be purchased at City Hall. The City has reported seeing piles of large items without stickers. Residences with these will be served a nuisance notice, followed by a municipal infraction if items are not disposed of properly. As an alternative, citizens can also haul their own large items to a landfill for a small fee.

Garbage is to be placed in the green totes and not to be placed in brown or blue totes as they are for recycling only. Recycling items can be mixed in the recycling totes but must not be mixed with garbage. There is a dumpster at the City shop available for large cardboard.
