Myrna Joan (Buchholz) Jones

Myrna Joan (Buchholz) Jones, 86, of Postville, Iowa passed away Friday, July 19, 2024 at her home near Postville. Myrna was born December 24, 1937 to Arnold and Viola (Boettcher) Buchholz in Storm Lake, Iowa. She was baptized on January 16, 1938 at Zion Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, Iowa. Zion was also the church where she was confirmed.

Myrna graduated from High School in 1955 and went on to study at Concordia College in Seward, Nebraska to obtain her teaching certificate. After college, Myrna went on to teach school at St. John Lutheran School in Paullina, Iowa; Trinity Lutheran School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Pilgrim Lutheran School in Houston, Texas.

On June 29, 1968, Myrna was united in marriage with Kenneth Jones at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hartley, Iowa. The newlyweds resided near Sheffield, Iowa, where Myrna continued her career in education as a substitute teacher for the Sheffield-Chapin Community School District. In 1974, Kenny and Myrna decided to relocate to a farm near Postville, Iowa. She also taught as a substitute teacher at Cora B Darling Elementary School until 1976 when she decided to stay home and raise her two children. She returned to the workplace in the mid-1980’s going to work for Elaine’s Cleaners, and worked for the dry cleaners in Postville until 2000 when she suffered a stroke. After much therapy, Myrna regained her mobility and went on to live an active life and was an inspiration to her family and friends.

Myrna was a member at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville for over 50 years. During her membership at St. Paul, she served on various committees, the church council and led the Christian Education Committee as Sunday School Superintendent for many years. Outside of her church activities, Myrna was a member of the West Post Project Club, where she remained active until her recent illness. Myrna was a 4-H Leader of the Postettes 4-H club, the Poststar 4-H club, and the Big 4-Poststar 4-H club. She continued guiding 4-H youth in Postville and Allamakee County for nearly three decades. During this time, Myrna was inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame.

Some of Myrna’s greatest joys in life included living on the acreage where she could enjoy her dog Lassie, the horses and beautiful scenery. Most importantly, Myrna enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Surviving Myrna are her daughter, Janna (Steven) Foels of Urbandale, Iowa; son, Kent Jones of Thornton, Colorado; two grandchildren, Cole Foels (Andrea Waller) and Ashley Foels (Michael Peak); sisters, Marlene Mertens and Joyce Santi, brother Leslie (Karen) Buchholz; nieces and nephews, Bruce (Jane) Mertens, Michael Mertens, Barbara Mertens, Jeffrey (Lora) Santi, Jayson (Karla) Santi, and Emilee Buchholz.

Preceding Myrna in death were her husband, Kenneth; her parents, Arnold and Viola Buchholz; parents-in-law, Carl and Paula Jones; brother-in-laws Delbert Mertens and Ramond Santi, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Donald and Darlene Jones; and nephews Jonathan Santi and Steven Jones.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 23, 2024 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, Iowa with a one hour visitation before services at the church on Wednesday.

Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, July 24, 2024 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, Iowa with Rev. Lynn Noel as the Officiant.

Burial will follow at the Postville Cemetery in Postville, Iowa.
