Fundraiser being held for Postville Police K-9

Postville Police officer Sierra Fox, has attained full ownership of the K-9 dog, Xena, and has recently gotten the Dutch Shepherd re-certified as a dual purpose patrol and narcotics detection dog. The dog, who resides with Sierra, previously worked as a K-9 in West Union.

The following agreement was accepted at the City Council Meeting July 13: Fox agreed to retain ownership of the canine and she asked that the City cover the insurance while Xena is on duty. She also asked that they pay the yearly certification fee of $150, and any vet bills incurred due to injuries received while on the job.

Fox requested that the City pay to have the police vehicle fitted for K-9 transport. It was explained that while going with this plan, the City would save the cost of a new canine and its training which is estimated to be $20,000. The approximate cost for a K-9 cage, Fox noted, would range between $3,914.05 and $5,413.55. Because of the costs involved, it was decided to ask community members to help defray the costs associated with the K-9.

All donations will go toward vehicle equipment, training gear, veterinary expenses for Xena who is a certified dual purpose Dutch Shepherd. Xena is certified in narcotics detection, handler protection and tracking.
