Seniors receive scholarships, departmental honors at annual Dollars for Scholars reception

The annual Postville High School Awards and Dollars for Scholars Reception was held as scheduled Wednesday, May 6. However, due to the COCID-19 pandemic, the event was held virtually. The only persons present at the Fine Arts and Civic Center were presenters Greg Lage, president of Dollars for Scholars; Denise Mauss, guidance counselor; Brendan Knudtson, principal and Dave Koopman, member of the Dollars for Scholars Board of Directors. Award winner’s photos were flashed across the screen as individual awards were announced. It was the first time in the 28 year history of the Dollars for Scholars chapter in Postville that the students, parents, family and friends were not present to accept the awards and receive congratulations. However, hundreds of members of the Pirate family tuned in on Facebook Live and YouTube to share in the accolades received by the Class of 2020.

Thirty-four members of the Class of 2020 received Dollars for Scholars Scholarships. They are Shawn Avitan, Collin Bacon, Mahamed Dahir, Hanna Dehning, Julissa Elsbernd, Jillian Fish, Alexis Galvin, Victoria Haberkorn, Lindsey Hangartner, Yaritzy Hernandez, Jordin Hughes, Marcy Ixen, Eidi Jimenez, Alejandra Koozer, Gabriel Loera, Arnoldo Lopez, Sandy Lopez, Collin Malcom, Conner Meyer, Abdi Mowlid, Fatima Mowlid, Taylor Rankin, Tracer Rankin, Laura Roman, Matthew Russell, Veronica Santoyo, Hailey Shipp, Peyton Smith, Isaac Steffans, Jhoselyn Toj, Sania Torres, Nayeli Vega, Olivia Vega and Robert White.

Commencement exercises, also being held virtually, will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 17.
