Postville Pirates defeat highly ranked Waverly-Shell Rock 2-1

Last Monday the Pirate soccer team played top ranked Class IA Dyersville Beckman where they lost a heartbreaker 4-2.

Coach RJ Olsen said, “Dyersville had only allowed three goals all year before Postville scored tow against them in 65 minutes before the game was called due to weather.”

Waverly Shell Rock

Sixteenth ranked in Class IA, the Pirates scored early against 8th ranked Waverly-Shell Rock (Class 2A). The Pirates held a 1-0 lead at the half and the game was evened up when Waverly-Shell Rock scored off a free kick in the second half.

After 80 minutes the Pirates were tied 1-1 as the game continued into two ten minute overtime periods that ended up scoreless. Penalty kicks followed the 100 minutes of even soccer.

The Pirates had played four overtime games prior to this game against Solon, Gladbrook Reinbeck, Waterloo Columbus and Decorah as they lost all four.

The Pirates had one of five penalty kicks blocked but Waverly Shell Rock also only made four of five.

Aboody, Adikadar, Willy Martinez and Carlos were the successful penalty kickers for the Pirates. After the five kicks, each team selects five more kickers.

Waverly kicked first and missed, giving sophomore Samater Ali a chance to win the game with a successful penalty kick. Samater stepped up and scored to win the game after six penalty kicks. The Pirates defeated Waverly-Shell Rocks 2-1 as the Postville players rushed the field to celebrate.

The Pirates hosted Monticello this past Monday, May 22 and will play Waterloo Columbus Wednesday night at 6:30 in Waterloo. The substate final will be played at 12 p.m. on Saturday in Dyersville.
