National Guard to help with distribution of food in Postville

The Northeast Iowa Food Bank and the Postville Food Pantry are sponsoring a Mobile Food Pantry Monday, May 18 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. The Iowa National Guard will help distribute the food at the St. Paul Lutheran Church’s parking lot. This drive-through food distribution is available to anyone who needs food assistance. Clients will receive a box of dry items and a box of frozen food. Drivers may pick up food for more than one household.

Those picking up food are asked to write down a name for each household, the number of people in the household, and the zip code for the residence.  They are also asked to make sure they have room in their vehicle for two fairly large boxes.

There will be a Spanish translator on site to help those who need assistance. Other volunteers also will be onsite including members of the local FFA chapter. Anyone willing to volunteer should contact Barbara Herzmann, Carolyn Livingood, Audrey Wedo or Sharon Drahn.

While lining up to receive the donations, vehicles are asked to enter the parking lot from the south. Anyone who cannot be at the Mobile Food Pantry may come to the Postville Food Pantry at 133 W Greene St. from 2 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19.

The Postville location, including many dedicated volunteers have been serving nearly 100 clients the last several weeks. Last Tuesday, May 5, despite the rain, 95 family units were served. With help from volunteer Loren Eberling, a tent was set up outside the pantry so the tables, and the volunteers, stayed relatively dry. Again, those who are unable to afford to feed their families at this time are encouraged to come to the Pantry.
