Longtime Postville hairstylists will no longer be operating on Greene St.

Becky Monroe and Barb Friederich, who have been cutting, coloring and curling hair in downtown Postville for several decades, are hanging up their scissors and curling irons at year’s end. Well, not exactly. While Becky is retiring, Barb will be working two (or more) days a week beautifying the residents at The Good Samaritan Society, Postville and Grand Meadows Glen.

The women took time out of their busy schedules last week to reflect on their careers as cosmetologists and the memories they have amassed.

Becky, who has worked at the Headquarters since graduating from cosmetology school at NICC, said, “I got into this career later than most. I milked cows for 22 years before going to school. My husband, Dean, and I farmed in partnership with his parents, and, as we transitioned out of farming, I knew I had to find another career.”

Barb Friederich

Barb Friederich, who has operated her shop, The Beauty Expo, out of several locations, has been sharing space with Becky for the past two years. Barb, who said she became interested in the business because her dad was a barber, graduated from Capri School of Cosmetology in Cedar Rapids in 1982 and she, too, is hanging up her scissors for local clientele this month.
