Gundersons fulfill ‘bucket list’ dream as they build cabin

Rick and Renee Gunderson, who are lifelong Northeast Iowa residents, are fulfilling a ‘bucket list’ dream with the completion of their cabin this spring in south central Minnesota.

Avid campers, Renee said, “When we moved to Decorah several years ago, we lost a lot of large item storage space and that was something we were used to at our previous home. We originally purchased 3/4 of an acre of land in Lenora, Minn. to build a Quonset style storage shed to make up for the lost space.”

The rafters for the large shed, the couple noted, came out of an old barn in Wisconsin. Renee further explained, “As our family has always loved camping, we originally planed on just having four campsites and the shed.”

But that soon changed. With their growing family and toddler grandchildren, they decided camping needed to be simplified. Thus, the decision to build the cabin.

Renee continued with the story, “In the spring of 2015 we purchased an additional two acres of wooded land adjacent to our property to build the cabin. Rick and I have done the majority of the work ourselves but have also had a tremendous amount of help from our family and friends.”

Renee added, “Most of the building materials are from older buildings that were being torn down.   For example, we removed doors, 2 x 6 boards, and roof sheeting from Krambeer’s (former Rosalyn Krambeer home on Tilden Street) Bed and Breakfast in Postville.

The cabin, the Gundersons commented, will be named The Dragonfly, because as Renee puts it, “I am obsessed with dragonflies. They are a symbol of renewal and strength. Our time spent at The Dragonfly renews and strengthens our souls. Our cabin is a labor of love.”
