Good Samaritan Society, Postville to celebrate 50th anniversary Thursday, May 30 with 2 p.m. service

Through the vision and dedication of many, the Good Samaritan Society, Postville Center has been thriving for 50 years.

Through this vision the Postville Good Samaritan Center became a reality in 1969. The Center welcomed its first resident that year and has continued to grow and expand into the 21st century.

As the 50th anniversary is observed, a celebration will be held Thursday, May 30 in the Center’s main dining room beginning at 2 p.m. Rev. Steven Ullestad, Bishop of the Northeast Iowa Synod of the Lutheran Church, will preside at the celebration. Music will be provided by the St. Paul Quartet whose members are Bonnie Moellers, Sandie Helgerson, Kim Schutte and Brian Harbaugh. Todd Bunch, current administrator, will also  take part in the celebration.

As the facility celebrates 50 years, a trip down memory lane is a wonderful way to highlight Good Samaritan’s history in Postville.

The idea of building a skilled nursing home in Postville began in 1967 when a committee from St. Paul Lutheran Church met with their Pastor Charles Witt to discuss the need for skilled care for the elderly. Co-chairmen of the committee were Lyle Zieman and Milo Jacobia. On the committee’s recommendation, the church voted to purchase about seven acres of land on the southeast edge of Postville from Postville residents Emma Brown and Les Poesch.
