Council approves street repair projects, and water rate hike

The Postville City Council was called to order by Mayor Leigh Rekow on Monday, July  10 in the Council Chambers. Council person Mary Straate was absent.

Discussion was held on the high water bill of an elderly Postville resident due to a running and leaking toilet. As per City Ordinance, the Council felt they were unable to forgive any portion of the bill. They did, however, make a motion which will allow her to pay the bill over a 12-month period.

John Miller, who resides on Lawler Street, had asked the Council for permission to have chickens on his property. However, he did not appear at the meeting and, according to City Ordinance, he will not be allowed to keep the chickens within the City limits. No additional action was taken.

City employee Mark Seegmiller addressed the Council concerning street repair work that is pending. After discussion, the following projects and their costs were approved:

Springfield Drive, $36,302.25, bid awarded to River City Paving;

The 200 block of Post Street from South Reynolds to South Ogden, $21,545, bid awarded to River City Paving; 200 block of South Boody to West Tilden to West Post, $14,151.50, bid awarded to River City Paving and the alley between Post/Tilden/Reynolds/ Ogden, $14,000 bid awarded to River City Paving.
