City Council meets in special session with the Fire Department as large crowd fills lower level of Turner Hall

A crowd of approximately 75 people gathered at Turner Hall Monday, July 22 when the City Council met in special session to discuss the ongoing issues with the Postville Fire Department.

Mayor Leigh Rekow called the meeting to order and, after welcoming those in attendance, he read a prepared statement in which he explained the definition of a volunteer. He said the City is open to working with and supporting the department as they decide if they wish to remain a entity under the City or become completely separated. He further noted that the City budget would reflect monetary support for the department no matter which path they chose.

City Council person Moore opened by saying, “Our goal is not to see the Fire Department separated from the City. But the department, like all other City departments, must follow the rule of the state of Iowa. We want to come to an agreement that is best for everyone.”
