Baseball games to resume June 15 as Pirates will play an abbreviated JV schedule

After an announcement by Governor Kim Reynolds late last month, Iowa High Schools were able resume sports practices and games as of this Monday, June 1. Games are slated to begin June 15.

Postville baseball coach Corey Smock said, “We will only be playing a junior varsity schedule this year. We will have six playing dates and all games will begin at 10 a.m.”

Smock noted that he is expecting to have about 15 players on the team with two or three returning letter winners. 

He said, “We will really have to depend on the leadership of Riley Rankin and Enzo Jochola who have both seen lots of varsity playing time the last couple of years. We will have a very young team this year so we are really going to need to work on getting back to the basics and fundamentals of the game.”

He went on, “With the COVID-19 pandemic we do have restrictions. We will not be able to use the dugouts during practices and the kids must space themselves out by social distancing (six feet) as much as possible. The players will not be allowed to chew and spit sunflower seeds at any time.”

Temperatures of all players will be taken before practices and games and fans will not be able to sit in the bleachers and must space themselves out when watching the game.
