Area fourth graders make stocking caps for themselves as well one to share with those in need

Fleece-tied stocking caps

Fourth grade students in Postville participated in a service project last week when they made tied stocking caps for children in need. Along with donating a hat, they each were able to make a hat to keep for themselves.

Members of the fourth grade classes at Cora B. Darling School put away their books and pencils for a brief time Wednesday morning as they participated in a community service project which will help kids in the area stay warm this winter. Each of the fourth graders made at least two fleece-tied stocking caps, one of which they could keep, and the other to be donated to children in need.

The idea was the brain-child of fourth grade teacher RJ Olsen and his wife, Jennifer, who had participated in a similar project when they had chaperoned a youth trip to Detroit, Mich. a few years ago.

The extra hats which were made are being donated to Northeast Iowa Community Action Corporation who will, in turn, donate them to area youth.
